Congratulations to Dr. Wenfei Xu, assistant professor of geography and Broom Research Associate, on her coauthored publication in the journal Nature. In the first national-level analysis of home-loan programs administered by the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) and the Veterans Administration (VA) during the 1930s and 1940s, Wenfei Xu and her coauthors find that Black borrowers were disproportionately underrepresented in the share of home loans they received. While census data indicate that the US Black population was 9.9% in 1940, only 2.1% of FHA loans and 5.1% of VA loans went to Black borrowers between 1935 and 1947.
